It could get overwhelming when we think of all that has to be done when we bring a new puppy home.  It all has to get done eventually.  But there are some things that need to be done immediately.  The first thing to do, even before you get your puppy, is to enroll him in a positive puppy class.  It is important that this is not just any dog training class.  You want a puppy class that addresses temperament training, bite inhibition and prevention of behavior problems.  You want one where the pups are allowed to play off leash.  Please make sure the class you choose is reward based.  There should be no force, reprimands or punishment.  Be sure to ask questions before you enroll.  A puppy class that addresses these things will take puppies no older than about 18 weeks at the start of class. It’s a huge bonus if you can find a trainer who also provides puppy socialization groups.

Now that you have that taken care of it’s time to address some other important stuff. Think about the adult dog you want your pup to be.  We want confident, adaptable dogs for life.  If you have a puppy, you are training that adult dog right now.  We want our dogs to be confident in all environments and situations, with all humans and all dogs.  We want them to not be afraid of noises, such as traffic, thunderstorms and fireworks.  We want them to be happy to have people take away their food, bones and other favorite things.  We want for them to be happy to be left alone.  This is a time sensitive issue.  Developmentally, the earlier this training gets started the more successful it is likely to be.  

Another important early training issue is relationship building.  To build relationship it is important to establish trust .  It’s easy to do.  You are already providing all your pup’s good stuff (meals, play, tummy scratches).  You can bump that up another notch and hand feed your puppy.  This makes you pretty great.  Especially if you slip the occasional exciting yummy thing in with his kibble.  For there to be a solid foundation of trust, you have to be trustworthy.  Please avoid any harsh handling, verbal reprimands, etc.  I know you won’t be using physical punishment of any kind.  But even a harsh “NO!” can make you pretty scary to a pup who is still trying to figure you out.  Learn how to keep the ‘no’ stuff from happening so you don’t even have to go there.  If a pup is snuggled one minute then loudly reprimanded the next then this unpredictable human behavior can make a pup unsure.  This affects confidence and relationship.

Name recognition is an important early training issue.  Training is a process which takes time.  All pups need to learn many skills in order for us to be able to communicate with them.  But, while going through this process, if you can get a snappy head turn when you say your dog’s name you can stop a pup in his tracks.  This keeps him safe.  It often can get the puppy to come right to you.  Try not to overuse the pup’s name.  Try really hard to not use their name with anything negative (as in “Rover, NO!”).  We want the sound of the pup’s name to be relevant and positive.

Also on the list of early things to teach are chew training and housetraining.  The goal with both is to keep the puppy successful.  Constant supervision when the puppy is out of the crate and crating the pup when you can’t supervise are the keys to success.  Well, that and rewarding the pup for the behavior we want.  Please do not punish or reprimand the puppy if he guesses wrong about what he should chew or where he should eliminate.  Remember, he’s not being bad…he just hasn’t learned these things yet. We surely want to get started early on skills training (sit, stay, come, polite leash walking).  This should be covered in a good Puppy Class.  And you’ll want to practice a lot at home.  But teaching the pup that the world is a fun and safe place, preventing the usual doggie behavior problems and preventing the dog from establishing bad habits are the first order of business.  Like I said, there’s lots to do.  Better get started!

I once had a dog who refused to stop getting on the sofa.  Sure, I taught him to stay off the sofa when I was home, but as soon as I went to sleep or left the house, I could hear him jumping back up in his favorite spot on the sofa…

…and he got doggy fur all over the clean upholstery. We fought this battle for most of his life and I was always frustrated.  Since that time, though, I’ve learned a lot of little tricks and ways of training a dog so you can keep your fur friend off the sofa, and that training starts when your dog is young.

Puppy Training

Dogs understand the concept of territory and they respect restrictions about territory.  If you tell your dog not to go into a room or if you make a doorway your own, your dog will usually respect what you tell them.  Most of the time, your dog will only disobey these boundaries if you stop being the alpha leader or if you fail to set up the boundaries.

As soon as you bring your new puppy home you should set clear boundaries about where he can go in the house and when he’s allowed to go there. You should avoid spray deterrents and odors.  They can make the sofa less comfortable but they don’t usually work for dogs that jump up there to sleep.  They will only keep the dog from licking the sofa.

One good way to keep your dog from jumping up on the sofa when you aren’t home is crate training.  You can keep your dog in an enclosed space if you are away or asleep and your dog will have his own spot for sleeping.

You can also try laying things across the sofa.  Try using balloons, books, plastic mats, cardboard boxes, or newspapers, and plastic coat hangers for example.  You can use anything as long as it’s not as comfortable as the sofa cushions that your dog enjoys.  This can help teach your dog that the sofa is not as pleasant as he thinks.

On the other hand, you will need to cope with all the things on the sofa that your dog may scatter around your living room.  Crate training as an alternate sleeping place is still a good idea.  Don’t allow your dog on the sofa or other furniture, even when he looks at you with pleading eyes; and watch your dog like a hawk so he doesn’t get on the sofa when you aren’t looking.

You may not be able to completely get your dog to stop getting on the sofa when you leave him home alone, unless you use a crate.  On the other hand some dogs will learn to respect the fact that the furniture is off limits.  You can also teach him that he has his own bed for sleeping.  In the end, that’s about all you can do to train him to stay off the sofa and in his own place.

Positive training is all about finding the thing that motivates the dog then rewarding desired behavior with it.  All living things repeat behavior that has been rewarded.  Would you go to work if you didn’t get a paycheck?

Treats are not the only way to reward a dog.  It’s a good idea to find a variety of other motivators.  This keeps the dog interested in training and allows you to train every time you and your dog are together.  Once you have identified the things he likes best you can start to use them for training.  It can be anything.  If the dog likes it, it is technically a reward.  How many times a day do you open the door for your dog?  How often does your dog get scratched behind the ears?  Do you throw tennis balls?  Do you feed your dog?  All of these activities are inherently rewarding which makes them ideal training moments. If you ask your dog to do something before you give something you will be getting the dog’s focus numerous times a day and teaching impulse control.  The dog will be practicing learned behaviors in a variety of situations.  Dogs don’t generalize well.  They need help like this from us so that they can perform the skills they’ve learned in places other than where they were taught.  So many times we squander multiple opportunities every day to teach our dogs that good behavior makes their favorite stuff happen. Using your dog’s ‘life’s rewards’ allows you to train during every interaction you and your dog have all day long.

It’s important to note that dogs are not motivated by the need to dominate us.  This archaic and pervasive notion gets dogs in a lot of trouble.  They just do what works for them.  Make good behavior be the thing that works, the thing that brings your dog all of his favorite things.

By using all of your dogs identified rewards you are able to communicate immediately when your dog does something you like.  It doesn’t mean that you had to ask the dog for the good behavior.  Dogs do good deeds all the time.  Not being bad is being good and is rewardable.  When your dog lies down, go over and give a nice, calm tummy rub.  When he comes to you, pick up the closest toy, make it squeak and throw it.  If you have a jumper, reward him every time he sits.  Attention is hugely rewarding.  Make the sitting be the thing that gets your attention.   Jumping gets ignored.

Treats are nice for extended training sessions for keeping the dog interested.  But food often ends up being used as a crutch and as a bribe in real life situations and in training sessions. I’m all  for using food.  It is the essence of survival which makes it the ultimate motivator.  But it is important to minimize the presence of food and to fade it away as soon as possible.  This helps avoid having a dog who ‘will only work for food’.  Even better is to use games and toys and all the other things your dog loves that are not food.

Praise is nice.  And it’s an important part of every reward.  But, by itself, it’s not as motivating as you might think.  This is especially true if you have a new dog and you have not yet established a relationship.  To use praise as a reward certainly doesn’t hurt the dog.  But motivating the dog with something she really cares about (food, games, toys, etc.) can make training more efficient.  Praise, after a relationship is established, can stand alone.  But most people who are training their dogs haven’t had their dogs very long and they are just getting to know each other.  If we praise while we reward the praise becomes more powerful by itself later.

I had a weekend at home recently doing a lot of work in the yard.  My puppy was being trained the entire time.  Every single time we crossed paths she had a mini training session.  She loves to pounce on the weeds that I pull then run away with them.  It’s cute.  It makes clean up a little more involved.  But it’s cute.  All weekend long, when I needed a check in, I would call the puppy.  When she arrived I’d look for the closest weed that needed pulling, then I’d yank it and throw it for her.  Her recall in the yard is now close to 100%.  It was that simple to do.  And I got all my weeds pulled.  She also had to give me a hi 5 before any door was opened for her.  My old (dearly departed) guy loved chasing snow balls.  Many a recall was rewarded this way.  His other favorite thing was a butt scratch.  I always had one of those with me for those good dog moments.

If you know what your dog likes you have a ready reward whenever he does something that you like. If you reward the behaviors you want, then the dog will start to do them with more frequency.  He will learn that good behavior makes good things happen for him.  It is a mindset you get in when you are with your dog.  After you do it for awhile, it becomes habit.  So, the next time your dog is obsessing on that elusive tennis ball under the couch, ask for a sit/stay, a down or a rollover.  Then reward the dog by getting the ball and throwing it.   It’s a great opportunity to practice, just one more time, the things your dog has learned.
